Prep for Exterior Painting

There’s a lot more than slapping paint on a wall that goes into painting your exterior. Depending on the painter, you’ll have varying final results depending on what kind of preparations they make for your project.

Procoat crews take a very detailed and conscientious approach to prep, as it sets the foundation for the quality of the paint job.

Wash

A clean surface is best when applying a fresh coat of paint. Pressure washing before painting is a must if you want your paint job to last as long as possible. Dirt, mold, or chipping paint makes it difficult for new paint to adhere properly.

SCRAPE

Scraping paint that is peeling or flaking is really important. Similar to pressure washing, scraping assures that your paint will adhere properly and not start peeling too soon.

SAND

Sanding is yet another way to fully prepare the surface for painting. Once flakes of paint are scraped off, sanding gives your walls a surface that is as smooth as can be so that there will be no bumps or wrinkles in the finished product.

MASK

In order to avoid splatters on windows, gutters, and any other surface you’re not painting, use plastic or paper to cover these. It can be tedious, but so worth it when you don’t have to do unnecessary clean up.

PRIME

When necessary, especially during color changes, using primer is a good way to make sure the surface is totally ready for your fresh coat of paint. When it’s a color change, using primer helps neutralize the color so that the old color doesn’t show through as an undertone.

Color in Film

Color affects us emotionally and psychologically, and movies are meant to take us to another world, so it makes sense to use color to evoke a response. Just like the color you paint your walls affects how you feel in your home, the way color is used in film affects how you feel as you watch.

There are three components of color to consider when filmmakers choose color palettes:

  • Hue – the color itself
  • Saturation – intensity of the color
  • Brightness – The darkness or lightness of a color

Think of your favorite movie.
What kinds of colors
are used in the wardrobe,
scenery, and props? There’s no
way to separate the feeling from
th color schemes, even
if we don’t notice it at first.

It’s so easy to see how color palettes have power in this intriguing article by Mary Risk in Studio Binder: How to Use Color in Film

She says, “The primary reason for using color in film might be obvious: to make the images colorful, dynamic, and beautiful. But there is a secondary reason that facilitates visual storytelling…Although single, recurring colors can hold a deeper meaning, a more fleshed out film color palette (or color scheme) is most effective in communicating thematic context. A balanced movie color palette and scheme refers to the harmonious relationships of colors on a color wheel. Let’s look at some movie color palette examples and the various ways they are used.”

From the same article, she shows examples of colors and their associated messages.

Not only do filmmakers choose certain colors to evoke a feeling, they also use them to show contrasts in characters or to show how a character or story evolves over time.

This can show up as using contrasting hues for the “good guy” and the “bad guy” or by slowly changing the hue as a character makes changes in their life. Below you can see different approaches to color palettes, each of them with a different purpose and with the potential to be very powerful depending on the execution.

Graphic from Studio Binder

Next time you’re cozy on your couch, popcorn in hand, watching a new movie (after scouring Netflix for thirty minute) pay attention to what the colors are telling you. When there is an intense scene, when a character comes to a resolution, or when two people fall in love, what colors are most prominent in each instance?

The fun thing about movies is that they can paint life literally any color they choose.

Matching Floor Colors With Paint Colors

Matching floor colors with paint colors seems simple enough, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Home Made Easy says, “There are countless wall paint colors out there, so it may seem daunting to choose the right one. To make that task a little easier, here’s a guide on how to find paint colors that go with wood floor colors.

Photo from Home Made Easy

Light Wood Floors

A light wall color compliments light brown wood floors very well. It’ll create a feeling of openness and warmth. It also creates an illusion of more space for small rooms and make bigger rooms feel bright and airy. Consider various shades of white, off white, and beige.

Grey Floors

If your floors are more of a light grey tone, consider muted greens or cool blues for your walls. A subtle color will accentuate the tone of the floor, pulling the room together effortlessly. For a classic, clean look, white is always a great option as well.

Dark Floors

Darker flooring requires some extra attention, as it’s easy to pick a color that will close in the space too much if your walls become too similar to the floors. A safe choice is a light color that will brighten up the room. If you want to go darker, there are plenty of ways to make it work, and often it helps to try out some paint samples or at the very least visualize with multiple different paint swatches.

Undertones are Key

Colors are more than their face value. Choosing a wall color that coordinates well with the undertone in your flooring can be the difference between choosing a perfect color or one that clashes. Use it to your advantage by picking a wall color that makes the undertones pop or by selecting one that contrasts your floor color.

Why Use a Color Consultant for Your Painting Project?

You remember learning about the color wheel in elementary school, but choosing colors that best complement your home’s design is not always an easy feat! That’s why we provide an hour of free color consultation with a professional for every single painting project.

Color Consultants Offer a Professional Point of View

When approaching a color change in your home, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the options. While some people can easily choose what works in their spaces, it’s often helpful to get an objective point of view from an expert in color. A color consultant is an asset to a painting job because they keep up with the latest design trends and have a keen awareness of how various colors work together (and which ones don’t). The Spruce gives some good insight about what a color consultant can do for you as you plan your next painting endeavor. At Procoat Painting, we offer one hour of color consultation with one of our experts included in your project at no cost because we want the final result to be as amazing as you imagine it.

Benefits of Utilizing a Color Consultant

They’ll save you time with their years of experience and background in interior design

They’ll save you money by cutting down on the number of trips to the store you make for color samples

They’ll educate you in their area of expertise

They’ll listen to your vision and make suggestions based on your end goal

They’ll stay objective when you may feel emotionally attached to an idea that might not work as well as you hope

The end goal is always the same: we want you to love the new look of your home! Color consultation is one of the many ways we ensure that.

Adventures of a Painting Company During a Paint Shortage

Photo from Best Life

If “adventure,” means “headache,” then yes it’s been quite an adventure.

Unless you’ve tried to paint your home recently, you may not know that there is a very real paint shortage affecting this region right now. Back in February 2021, a winter storm in Texas caused a ripple effect that we are still feeling in July. All the way in Georgia and surrounding areas, painting companies are scrambling to find the products they count on for each new project.

“In an already-challenged supply chain due to COVID-19, the February natural disaster in Texas further impacted the complex petrochemical network causing significant disruptions,” Sherwin Williams told Bay News.

This shortage is still in effect at the time of year when people are painting
the most, which just complicates the situation further.

Our production manager and our Sherwin Williams rep have driven all over the region to hunt down the precious products we need in order to keep our clients happy. So far, we’ve managed to complete each new project, but not without breaking a little sweat (and maybe a few tears).

It’s shown us again that no matter what, we will go above and beyond
to keep our clients satisfied with our customer service and dedication!
We are still committed to high-quality
results despite the challenges we face in the 2021 Paint Shortage.

What Paint to Choose for Your Project

How you you choose the right type of paint for your project?

It’s easy to be intimidated by the towering shelves of paint cans at your local home improvement store. “Do I need primer? Why is that paint flat? Why are there fourteen different types of white?” may be some questions that come to mind.

The first step is choosing interior or exterior paint. That part, at least, is straight forward.

Interior paint is formulated to withstand scrubbing, be easy to touch up, and give really good coverage. The details matter most inside your house, so it’s important to choose high-quality interior paint that will last the longest amount of time. Exterior paint is made with ingredients that protect your home from UV rays, moisture, and mold.

Sherwin Williams has a great guide that matches types of paint to various surfaces. It’s definitely important to pay attention to surface type when choosing your paint.

Home Depot’s guide to choosing a paint finishes is extremely valuable

“Matte or Flat Paint provides a non-reflective, smooth appearance that hides surface blemishes like nail holes and patches…

Eggshell Paint is one of the most popular types of wall paint. Eggshell finish provides a low sheen and a soft, smooth finish just like a true eggshell…

Satin Paint is widely considered the most versatile and best paint for walls inside the home, a satin paint finish provides an elegant, almost pearl-like finish and soft sheen…

Semi-Gloss Paint is even more reflective than satin with a smooth sheen, semi-gloss paint gives rooms a shiny, sleek appearance…

High-Gloss Paint offers the highest level of reflection…”

What Types of Paint Does Procoat Use?

We’ve curated a list of high-quality paint that ensures your home or business will look beautiful for years to come. Superpaint is what we use on most of our projects, but we give clients the option to upgrade depending on what their needs are. Click each type to learn more!

Choosing a Painting Contractor

When choosing a painting contractor, trust is one of the key factors. You want to be sure you feel comfortable letting them in to your personal space. One reason Procoat Painting opened was to change the industry standard of low quality work, dishonesty, and inconsistency.

Important questions to ask potential painting contractors:

  • Do you have any past clients I can contact for reference?

+ baby's nursery with crib and mountains painted on wall

Painting Your Baby’s Nursery

Just because they arrive in this world fairly blind doesn’t mean your newest family member doesn’t want a beautiful room. Painting your baby’s nursery is an exciting step toward welcoming them into your arms!

baby nursery with mountain painted on the wall
Photo from Essential Baby

The room can grow with your child. Your two month old baby will prefer different colors than your six year old will. That’s the beauty of repainting the walls! Wall color is such a flexible decorative aspect of your home.

Newborns

do best with muted monochrome color schemes to avoid over-stimulation, especially before their eyesight is fully developed. This can help keep them calm during those late night feeding sessions.

By about three months

babies are able to see color, so it’s a good idea to add a little variety to the landscape of their room, while maintaining a mostly calm atmosphere. Sharp contrasts catch their eye, which is why you’ll notice crib mobiles and baby toys often have black and white patterns.

Around six months

you can add even more color to their space with artwork, a rug, or toys. At this point, they’re starting to roll around and maybe even crawl. Their room will be a safe, happy place that they can begin to explore.

At a year

babies (or soon-to-be toddlers) love to see a variety of colors, textures, and patterns in their space. It keeps their attention and stimulates their development.

When they grow much older than that

you can paint their room based on their preferences, which is a fun stage of development. Opinions on paint color are likely more welcome than their opinions at the dinner table with a plate of meatloaf in front of them.

Things to consider other than age

are the type of paint you use, the sheen of paint, and low/no VOC paint. Can you think of any other aspects to consider before plunging into a nursery painting project?

Home Lighting Tips of 2021

“Lighting is an essential component to a successful design scheme yet is so much more important in wintertime, when the days are shorter and we spend far more time indoors than usual.”

Better Homes and Gardens said it well!
Read on for home lighting tips to enhance your home’s design!

Home Lighting Tip 1: Respect your color palette.

Choose bulbs that won’t distort your color palette.
Without light there’s no color. Depending on what type
of lighting there is, we see colors differently.
You can choose paint and design colors that are
beautiful in the store, but look totally different when
you walk into your house. Depending on the warmth
level of your bulbs, colors will seem to shift.

Home Lighting Tip 2. Light fixture as a focal point.

It could be a beautiful chandelier over your
dining room table or a large floor lamp that draws you in.
Choose something that fits your style that
will bring the room together

Home Lighting Tip 3: Lamps are your friend.

From floor lamps to end table lamps, they can add texture,
color, and (obviously) light to a parts of your space that
need a little spice. Adding variety to your home lighting
does not necessarily mean you need to hire an electrician to
switch out your light fixtures. Lamps are a more affordable
way to enhance your interior style.

Home Lighting Tip 4: Get funky.

There are so many creative light fixtures out there these days
that you can really go wild if you want to. Home
lighting doesn’t have to be boring.
Take a risk, choose something your grandma wouldn’t.

Home Lighting Tip 5: Don’t forget your exterior.

We don’t suggest that you leave your holiday lights
up all year. What you can, though, do is exchange
your outdated exterior lights for ones that express your
style. Spotlights shining on your facade or front yard trees
give an element of beauty you can’t find in the daylight.
Lining the driveway and sidewalks with lights is not only
useful, but also adds to your curb appeal.

Design Dilemmas Inspired by Movie Scenes

Whatever your design dilemma is, there are always solutions

Houses come in all shapes and sizes. Even if you love your floor plan, there are probably things in your house that you wish were different. Maybe you used to love the way your house looked, but have grown tired of it or it’s a little outdated.

If you have a room that’s as small as a pocket, as narrow as a tube or far too large, read on for some tricks that can hide, divide or merely alter the focus in the room.

HOUZZ

Design Dilemma: Room is Too Small

If you have a room where it feels like the walls are closing in like the trash compactor in Star Wars Episode IV, this one’s for you. They really wouldn’t have felt so trapped if they just added some stripes to the walls, created an interesting focal point, or used mirrors. Honestly they were really overreacting about feeling crowded.

Photo from Star Wars

Han: I’ve got a very bad feeling about this.
Leia: The walls are moving!

Design Dilemma: No Backyard Privacy

The signal fire burns, a spectacular cloudy sunset lights up the sky…

Chuck: Chips? Dip?
But Wilson declines

Photo from Screen Rant

If the view from your kitchen window looks like a used car lot or you’re just tired of seeing your neighbors tanning on their back deck, let nature help you out.
Grow a privacy barrier and turn your backyard into a secluded oasis for those late night fire pit parties, just like the one Tom Hanks vacationed to in Cast Away.

If you don’t have twelve kids, but your living room still looks like the one from Cheaper by the Dozen, it’s probably time to make some changes. Maybe some purging is in order. Maybe you just need to clear your horizontal surfaces and decrease the number of mismatching throw pillows you own. It’s also a great idea to create a spot for each item to go (and put them in their places every time!). New habits are hard to build, but once you de-clutter to a good baseline, it’s not as hard to keep up with.

Design Dilemma: Too Much Clutter

Photo from Hooked on Houses

I guess you could say that when Tom and l left Midland… we had a mess of theories about how to raise children. We still have a mess of children, but no theories.

Design Dilemma: Outdated Decor

If your living room looks like it took style advice from Danny of Full House, you may want to make some simple changes. Even switching a few pieces of furniture for fresh, modern ones can make a big difference in how the room feels. Adding plants always brightens up a space that feels dusty. Bringing in some pops of color if you have a neutral color scheme right now is a fantastic way to bring life into your room.

DJ: (calling from livingroom) Dad, we’re home.
DJ, Harry and Stephanie walk in to the kitchen
Michelle: Stop! Dirt bad.
DJ: Oh, no. Dad taught Michelle the Tanner family motto.
Danny: Deej, I’m working on a new Tanner family motto. Don’t make fun of Dad until you can afford your own apartment.
