Cleaning Your Painted Walls

Cleaning your painted walls is just as important as cleaning other surfaces in your home. Even in the cleanest households, it’s impossible to avoid the dust and grime that collects on your walls over time. How you go about cleaning your walls is dependent on what kind of paint is covering them. Walls with different paint types and finishes require special care when scrubbing. We found this great article by Better Homes and Gardens that details how to go about cleaning your walls without compromising the paint. The article covers how to clean walls with different finishes and paints, how to make your own cleaner, and even how to prevent dirty walls so that you spend less time cleaning them later.

Importance of High Quality Paint

The importance of choosing a high quality paint is exponential when it comes to your next paint project. A lower quality paint may be cheaper up front, but will need more work over time than the high quality paint. Painting is an investment…in time, money and labor. But what does “quality” mean, and what benefits do high-quality paints provide? A high-quality coating starts with ingredients that allow paint to apply more easily, look better and last longer. There are four key ingredients that affect the quality of the paint; pigments, binders, liquids, and additives. Check out this article we found by Sherwin Williams to dive more in depth on what makes a high quality paint, and the importance of choosing a high quality paint to begin with.

Art and Health Connection

Today, let’s take a closer look at the connection between art and our health. As we mentioned in our previous blog post (which you can check out here), the first cave paintings date back over 30,000 years. As a species we have always been creating, whether out of necessity or seemingly just for the sake of it. This need to create is so ingrained in our DNA as humans that perhaps we don’t always stop to think about why that is. A lot of research in the medical field has actually suggested that art — and, more specifically, being creative — is, in fact, quite useful for our mental and physical well-being. Art doesn’t have to mean painting, it can be any creative expression, such as writing or dance. This art, or creative expression, can improve both your mental and your physical health. We found this informative article by Medical News Today that talks more about the studies that have been done in the medical field to prove this art and health connection.

+ Prehistoric Paintings - History of Paint

History of Paint – Prehistoric to Today

The history of paint is both a long and colorful one. In fact, the first cave paintings date back over 30,000 years. In prehistoric times, paint was made from materials that were readily available to the people. This is reflected in the earthy pigments that you can see on the cave walls. Today you can easily purchase paint of just about every color imaginable, but this was not always the case. It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that paint was introduced as a recognized element of the American national economy. The first recorded paint mill in America was reportedly established in Boston in 1700. Later, in 1867 the very first ready mixed paints became available in the United States. Over time, the paint industry grew. Besides mechanizing and professionalizing the paint industry, the Industrial Revolution also created vast new markets for paints and coatings. We found this bulleted article by The American Coatings Association to be very helpful in outlining the history of paint from prehistoric times to today.

+ Local Seamstresses Help Athens Make Masks During Coronavirus

Athens Makes Masks for Coronavirus

Hundreds of Athens seamstresses, from clothing store employees to sewing hobbyists, have stepped up to help make masks for use during the coronavirus pandemic. “Mask Making For Athens” began as a volunteer group which grew massively in size since it formed in late March. As of April 8th the volunteers included 224 working on sewing machines, 110 delivery volunteers and 96 support volunteers. They have received requests for 4,467 masks and have delivered 2,422. The group has since continued to expand their list of recipients. You can learn more about their efforts in this article by The Athens Banner Herald, as well as visit their Facebook Group.

Adrienne Antonson, owner of State the Label on 585 Barber Street, has also stepped up to make masks for Athens. She and her team of seamstresses are using fabric pants to help supply both those in healthcare and the general public. “I think every human on this Earth has been very affected by what’s happening,” said Antonson, “There’s a feeling of helplessness when all you can do is stay home. Knowing this is a problem locally that we could help fix with our skills, and we had the supplies, we had to do something.”

Community and Red Dress Boutique are two other local to Athens boutiques that are using their skills to help make masks during the pandemic.

To read more about what these local boutiques, and others, are doing to help Athens make masks during the Coronavirus, check out this article published by The Red and Black.

How Paint Colors Impact Mood

The paint colors on the walls surrounding you can have a big impact on your mood. Whether we are talking about a work of art, or the paint on the walls of your home, color has a physical effect on us because of it’s energy. While many of us are spending more time in our homes than we normally do, it’s important to know how paint colors impact your mood and which paint colors are more positive and even more relaxing. We found this article by Better Homes and Gardens that recommends fifteen soothing paint colors for your home. With so many options, selecting a calming paint color can be a daunting task. Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, suggests looking inward before getting started. “Color can help shape our day-to-day environments and impact our mood,” she says. “So when selecting colors, people should think about how they want the space to make them feel and let their emotions guide their decisions.” She suggests blues and greens to feel more relaxed as well as neutrals to feel more calm. In these uncertain times, I think we could all benefit from a little more calm and relaxation.
